an only child, kiyong grew up getting all the love from his parents. you can say, he was pretty much shielded from the real world and how harsh it could be which is why kiyong is an innocent and kind person, trusting others easily and believing a person has a good reason for their actions whenever he's taken advantage of.

a bright and hardworking student, kiyong focused on his studies throughout his school years in hopes of getting into a good university on a scholarship. the less money his family spent on his tuition, the better. it's not like they were poor or he was desperate to give his parents a better life, it's just he didn't want to add unnecessary stress.

with the encouragement of his family, kiyong took part in an exchange program that would send him to america for a semester. there, he would meet shijima gou. their similar interest in acrobatics would bring the two together thus becoming good friends. kiyong would help improve gou's skills while the other would tell stories of his brief travels.

because gou is older by a few months, kiyong calls him hyung which messes with the rider since he's not used to it. gou has even told the other to just call him by his name but he refuses. it's just how things work back home which made gou, unfortunately, give up and stop correcting him.

gou would end up dropping out of college before the semester ended, believing college wasn't for him and wanted to continue his travels. however, he didn't leave the city until kiyong went back home. he wanted to spend more time with his friend before their separation but also because he had to look after him as gou saw the kind of person kiyong was.

friendly and a little immature, gou would always find kiyong smiling and laughing with others. he befriended people easily yet has never found someone he can call a true friend(until gou), secretly lonely behind his happy exterior but tries to stay optimistic. his personality has gotten him hurt in the past and even during his time in america. gou would become his protector to ensure no one continues to use and hurt him.

when it came time for kiyong to leave, the two made a promise to stay in contact often, whether it be text messages or emails or phones calls. on the plane ride back to korea, kiyong reflected on the experience he had in america, unware that his life was going to change in a way he never expected.
